When you’re hiring a company to clean your home, you’ll want to ask a few questions before signing a contract. You want somebody who you know you can trust, because they’ll be coming in to your intimate space and caring for your things. Here are a number of questions you might want to ask to potential cleaning companies.
- Do you have expertise in cleaning stains and unusual cleaning problems? It’s one thing to dust, sweep, and mop; it’s another thing to tackle mildew in your bathroom grout or carpet stains. Does the company you’re looking to hire have the expertise to address the cleaning issues you have?
- Are you fully insured and bonded? If your cleaning company is insured and bonded, any potential problems due to cleaning are backed up and covered. This gives you peace of mind.
- Do you bring your own cleaning equipment and supplies? This question can get at what sorts of tools and supplies they use – green cleaning, microfiber, traditional products, commercial-grade, etc. It’s also important to know whether this is a company which provides its own equipment and supplies, or just the equipment (which means you offer the supplies). If you dislike the cleaning supplies, can you provide your own?
- How will you gain access to my home? You should be able to have your housecleaner gain access to your home while you are out. Will this be leaving a key under the mat? Give them a keypad code? Or will you just stay home during the cleaning? Different cleaners have different policies.
- What should I do with my pet? If you have a pet, your housecleaner may have an additional fee or may want you to crate your pet or put them in a safe space outdoors. Consider introducing your pet to the housecleaner on the first visit, particularly if you won’t be home during subsequent ones.
- How do you set your rates? Find out whether your cleaning service charges an hourly rate, by project, or by number of employees needed. As part of this, find out how long they estimate it will take to clean your home. After the first visit, you should be able to either get a flat rate for future visits or give the company a cap on cost or number of hours spent per visit.
- Can you provide me with a free estimate? Your cleaning company should provide you with a free estimate of cost for services, either through an online form or phonecall, or from an in-person visit.
