Spots in Your Home You're not cleaning enough

12 Spots in Your Home You’re Probably Not Cleaning Enough

Whether you stay on top of daily tidying or prefer to do a deep clean every so often, you probably already have a list of chores you’re familiar with. Washing the dishes, changing the sheets, and sweeping the floors all seem like obvious tasks, but how many of these other spots in your home have you added into your cleaning routine?

1. Mattress & Pillows

Even with a sheet, mattress cover, and pillowcases, your mattress and pillows are still subject to collecting debris like dead skin cells or stains. Toss your pillows in the washing machine on gentle and vacuum your mattress about once a month. Spot treat stains as they are created.

2. Light Switches

Wall switches are high-touch areas that you use multiple times a day every single day. Now think about how often you’re washing your hands. Those germs hitch a free ride all day long if not killed right away. Instead of installing a hand sanitizing station next to every switch in your home, simply wipe the receptacle down regularly.

3. Walls

Before you scroll past this one thinking you have to scrub your walls on a weekly basis, we aren’t suggesting you get out the sponge and bucket. Instead, consider using a duster, a Swiffer sweeper, or even a dust brush attachment on your vacuum to target the dust, cobwebs, and general buildup on your walls and baseboards.

4. Refrigerator

Ignoring your fridge during a cleaning session only results in debris build-up, a less efficient appliance, and the opportunity for mould and bacteria to flourish. Wipe down the inside, including the gaskets, and the outside, including the coils. And don’t forget to sweep underneath!

5. Dishwasher

Grimy build-up has a grossly negative impact on the efficacy of your washer.  Wipe down the inside, taking special care to remove debris. Then use specially formulated dishwasher cleaner tablets or go DIY and run an empty load with a cup of baking soda to suck up all those lingering odours.

6. Trash Can

When was the last time you actually washed your garbage can? Plastic bags are liable to tear, and if you have teenagers there’s a good chance that trash doesn’t always get 100% inside the can. Wash the receptacle with a bleach mixture inside and out to ensure any germs and odours are dealt with regularly.

7. Bathroom Fan

The combination of dust and moisture creates a nasty layer of sludge on your bathroom exhaust fan. Remove the cover by pulling down by the edges and squeezing the springs to release them. Then give it a good wash with dish soap and hot water.

8. Shower Caddy

All that soap residue and water can build up to create the perfect environment for mould. During your shower, rinse off the caddy to break down any build-up. For tougher soap scum or mold, a brief bleach soak will clear that right up!

9. Shower Curtain

While we’re still in the bathroom, let’s take a moment to look at your shower curtain. Regardless of material, it needs to be regularly cleaned to eliminate mold, mildew, and other nasties. Baking soda will do the trick, or alternatively, a turn in the washer on the delicate cycle.

10. Dryer Vent

While most of the other items on this list are important in terms of keeping away bacteria and mould, cleaning your dryer vent has nothing to do with germs and everything to do with fire protection. A buildup of lint in your vent can easily fuel a house fire. Every so often, use a clean toilet brush to get deep into the vent and remove excess dirt and lint.

11. Door & Window Frames

Door and window frames are great at hiding dust and dirt. The crevices make it hard to spot unless you’re really looking. Use a microfiber cloth or a feather duster to regularly wipe down those areas.

12. Heat Registers

Your furnace works at a high efficiency when the heat registers are clean and clear. Make sure the area around these vents is uncluttered, vacuumed, and wiped down occasionally. This works to reduce the chance of a fire, help your furnace distribute heat, as well as improve air quality since you won’t be circulating dog hair through the vents unknowingly.
