Spring cleaning is great for your mental and even your physical health. You finally have the opportunity to get rid of the old, welcome in the new, and press reset on the safe space you call home. If the idea of tackling your whole house is daunting, you wouldn’t be alone. Sometimes it can be hard to get over the overwhelming feeling so you can actually complete the task and take advantage of all those benefits. If that sounds familiar, we wrote this article for you! We’ve curated our best tips to help get you motivated and inspired to spring clean and declutter your home.
Set Yourself Up For Success
Before you pick up a single thing, start by setting yourself up for success:
- Designate piles for trash, recycling, donations, and those items you want to keep. Setting these aside now will keep you from creating thousands of micro-piles all around the house as you go.
- Make it a team effort. Even if you live alone, you don’t have to do it all alone. Simply asking a friend to help can make the chores fly by. If you do have more people in the home, they should all be involved in the process to help break up the work.
- Consider scheduling a professional cleaning after you’ve decluttered. This works to your advantage in two ways. For one, you may feel less overwhelmed knowing you can just focus on decluttering. For another, you can give yourself a finish line, knowing that you should have all the decluttering finished by “x” date. This is a great tip for all of the chronic procrastinators out there.
Breaking It Down by Space
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your home certainly won’t be cleaned top to bottom in one. Pick one area per day and go wild with the decluttering. Here are some major areas to get you started:
- Kitchen
- Dig items out of the refrigerator and pantry. Throw out any food past its expiry date. Donate any food that is still good but you know that no one is eating.
- Move on to the cupboards. Unless you entertain often or have a big family, you could probably stand to throw out or donate unused mugs or china. If you haven’t used it in over a year, you probably aren’t going to use it.
- Clean out the chemicals under the sink. Toss those empty or expired containers, take stock of what you need, and organize so that you can clearly see everything you have under there.
- Living Room
- Target the piles. What keeps piling up in this space and why? Are the gaming controllers stacking up, the clean laundry spilling over? Whatever it is, find a storage or organizational solution to keep those areas clear.
- Consider repurposing existing furniture or investing in an ottoman to utilize as extra storage space.
- Use stylish touches like decor trays to store your miscellaneous items like remote controls and chargers.
- Bedroom
- Go through your closet and drawers. Yes, all of them! Any clothes that are damaged can be tossed or recycled. Clothes you haven’t worn in over a year can be donated.
- Apply the same treatment to your jewelry box. Anything you are keeping should fit in the box or alternatively on a jewelry tree. This keeps it from being damaged or going missing.
- Assess your storage space. Is your nightstand overflowing? Are your knick-knacks taking over? Adjust as needed. Get rid of whatever you don’t love and utilize storage solutions for what you want to keep.
