Do you want an easy way to save money and avoid harsh chemicals? Making your own all-purpose cleaner is lighter on the wallet and the planet. Perfect for less intense cleaning jobs, this recipe will leave your house clean, fresh, and smelling lightly lovely.
Vinegar
White vinegar is also known as a diluted form of acetic acid. That means that it has the qualities of an acid, like cutting through grease and grime, and dissolving deposits due to hard water. Vinegar breaks down odours and is particularly effective for cleaning up after your pet’s “accidents”. While vinegar has a strong smell, as it dries the scent dissipates. A slight scent after cleaning helps you notice the hard work you just did!
Essential Oil
Essential oil isn’t just for spa days and aromatherapy diffusers! Several types have anti-microbial properties, such as tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil. Because microorganisms can cause disease, it’s a good idea to slow their growth. Plus, essential oils leave behind a nice scent!
Baking Soda
Baking soda is the workhorse of cleaning products. It’s a deodorizer, stain remover, and anti-bacterial agent. Whether you’re tossing it straight into your kitchen garbage bin to kill the smell, adding it to this great multi-purpose cleaner, or mixing it into all-natural shampoo, baking soda is your go-to ingredient!
The Recipe
¼-½ cup white vinegar
Several drops tea tree or eucalyptus essential oil
2 Tbsp baking soda
Pour white vinegar into a spray bottle and then add the baking soda. Top it off with a few drops of essential oil, and then fill the rest of the bottle with water. Shake well, and let it settle before using. Before spraying it onto fabrics, do a careful test spray to make sure it doesn’t bleach the fabric.
